Well actually what I'd do would be to install the bootloader to floppy...
AFTER you tell the ubuntu installer to install bootloader to the hard
drive you should get to pick exactly where, and if you choose /dev/fd0
ubuntu will install grub to floppy, this will A) give you a way to boot
ubuntu while you work with your existing boot loader. And then B) you can
use ubuntu's /boot/grub/menu.lst file as a guide to setting up your
mandriva bootloader.
In my case I did this because I already had a grub bootloader in my mbr
from one of my existing fedora installations. And on mbr of my 2nd hard
drive (/dev/hdc) I have a copy of lilo from my mandrake installation (I
have DrDos on the /dev/hdc1 which I couldn't get grub to boot while lilo
succeeded so my grub has a choice to boot the lilo for when I want to go
there...)
Though since you intend to eventually flush the mandriva I'd recommend also
modifying ubuntu's menu.lst to be able to boot your mandriva system from
ubuntu's grub. of course, in both cases you will have to insure that
/boot/ contains ALL the vmlinuz and initrd.img files specified... If you
haven't set up a separate boot partition that both can use yet, you could
simply copy them to both mandriva's and ubuntu's /boot partitions.
When your ready to put ubuntu's grub in your mbr you can do it with
something like:
grub-install (hd0)
(It's been awhile so if I got the grub-install command wrong would
someone please correct me?)
If you would like to see examples of my working grub.conf (menu.lst) and
lilo.conf files that both successfully multi boot win98se (rarely) and 4
separate linux installations including a mandrake and my kubuntu, then
do check out:

&
https://home.comcast.net/~jtwdyp/lilo.conf
Which I'll leave in place for at least the next 30 days
(today is: Mon Jan 30 20:29:33 EST 2006)
Lots of luck on your tri-boot attempt!
