The installation program doesn't make any changes until it confirms
(twice) that you want to write the changes to disk. You may cancel at
any time before that without loss.

This depends on if the applications in each are such different versions
that the data would be incompatible and the application(s) do not have
backwards compatibility. I'd have to say that the risk of that is not
0%, but I can't imagine it's that high either.
