Installing Ubuntu in a HP pavilion a522n

I had all sorts of trouble on an HP a405n. APIC off or the kernel would
panic and reboot. Additionally, hotplug enabled would halt the computer.
I ultimately stopped trying and installed on another desktop. It seems
to be related to the motherboard's bios and HP doesn't support anything
but windoze.
