failed to start X server (Ubuntu 5.10)

I tried the command sudo dpkd-reconfigure xserver-xorg and chose the
automatic option and allowed it to fill in most of the prompt. It detected
my matrox card and location, at least it seemed too. But still when I
rebooted it comes up with the same 'failed to start' error.
Log file indicateds 'no devices detected.'
I can include the exact output of the log if it would help.
Any other ideas.

in the terminal type sudo dpkd-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and configure
everything which wasn't automatically detected manually. Follow the
prompts. If you don't understand one of the questions, then just press
enter.
