I'm facing a similar issue here. I just hope my system still boots tomorrow
morning :-) Here's the output of 'apt-get upgrade' -- it's localized in
portuguese, I hope it's not a problem. The first attempt just locked, I had
to interrupt it after a few minutes with CTRL-C; that's the output of the
second attempt:

As far as I can tell it installed but with some weird errors. I'm not sure
if it will boot, and I'm sending this message *before* testing because I
really fear I may have problems to fix when I try it.

BTW there's nothing on /var/log/messages. Any other place where I need to
look?
