I've never got the hang of those 'crazy versions' either and I've run
Debian and derivatives for a several years :-/

You're right that the '1ubuntu1' version isn't on 'us.archive.ubuntu.com'
but it is on 'archive.ubuntu.com'.
I suggest you change to another mirror. I live in the UK but have a
couple of servers in the US running Ubuntu since March last year. I
gave up using the US archives long ago as they're so unreliable
(unavailable, packages missing etc).
