No longer able to mount CD: "/dev/hdc does not exist"

Hi all,

For some reason, I am no longer able to mount my CD/DVD drive. I get
this error message:

  mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist

Indeed, hdc is no longer in /dev/

Browsing through /var/log/syslog, I came across a pair of error
messages from earlier today:

  Jan 27 10:25:11 localhost kernel: [4900769.203000] hdc: status
error: status=0x00 { }
  Jan 27 10:25:11 localhost kernel: [4900769.203000] ide: failed
opcode was: unknown

This was repeated four times, interspersed with this:

  Jan 27 07:40:48 localhost kernel: [4890905.084000] hdc: ATAPI reset complete

There are tens of thousands of these lines which ended in the log at
the point when my laptop unexpectedly froze, requiring a cold reboot.

Am I to assume my CD drive has died. Or?...
