OK, what's the trick? (Ubuntu and Multimedia revisited.)

Done. No change in behaviour.
Another thing I did was do the "multimedia system selector" thing. I
booted once with the card disabled and ran it to see the expected
"cannot make pipeline" errors. Then I rebooted with the card enabled
and ran it again. The tests all "worked" in that they made no
complaints. But no sound came out my speakers.
Any other ideas?
