Xsane Locks System

I just installed Ubuntu 5.10 about a week and a half ago. This is my
first real Linux experience. I must say I am really pleased, though I
have had to piddle quite a bit to get everything set up. The only
problem I am currently having is trying to access my scanner (CanoScan
FB620Usb). Any time I have tried to access the scanner using xsane or
from Open Office the system locks completely and I have to reboot. This
is currently my only real issue. I have gotten everything else
functioning to my liking. I would appreciate any insight as to what
might be the cause.
