syncing my palm pda with ubuntu

The same way you used to, I would guess.

One is used for hotsyncing.   I have no idea what the other ne is for.
An interesting twist is that different Palm models use different ports
for hotsyncing (my old m500 used one of them, Tungsten T1 the other,
Tungsten T3 was back to the first one),  You will have to try both to
figure out which one is the right one for your Zire.

One of the above should work.

Do you press the HotSync button on the cradle/cable?  You have to wait
some 5 seconds after that until the device becomes available.

Actually, IIRC, Gnome Pilot notices that you connected a palm after you
press the HotSync button, and performs a sync automatically.  If you
have the pilot applet added to your panel.

I use pilot-xfer from the command line myself.  I wouldn't say it is
easier to use, but at least I can be sure it will do what I want it do
and nothing more.  I have not yet found a solution for editing PIM
information on the desktop (well, laptop), but I haven't been looking
all that hard.  I suspect jpilot is the best option.
