Upgrading on new Ubuntu release

It probably won't break anything. It will not upgrade automatically. To 
upgrade change all your repositories to the ones of the version you want 
to upgrade to, and then type this is a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop (substitute kubuntu, edubuntu, or 
xubuntu as appropriate)
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
