Sorry. I failed to notice that you installed qmail. not exim.

I believe qmail has a rather odd, non-free licence, and as far as I can see
even the multiverse repository does not include it, although there are
qmail references in the apt cache.

Thus I'm unsure whether qmail is installable without compiling it
yourself. If you absolutely *must* use qmail, perhaps someone who has
successfully installed it can help.
