Hi,

as others have explained on this list already, /var/mail is not a place you
want to tinker with as a regular user. There are several reasons for this,
which are not very interesting for the time being. The thing to remember is:
mutt looks at /var/mail/ by default untill you tell it to look elsewhere.

Now we come to the issue of configuring mutt. Seth's post (with message id
<ead5210f0601190010ib89a512ud21f57511cd8fd1 at mail.gmail.com>) can help you with
that. You probably also want to figure out how to use a mail fetching tool
(such as fetchmail) to actually get mail to your machine. I know from
experience that this can be tricky if you have to figure it all out for the
first time. I've written a small howto for configuring mutt with fetchmail and
maildrop (and also gnuput):

Perhaps this 'll help you get started.

Good luck,

  Bas
