Apologies for not answering your questions, but I can't help wondering:
5.1x? There's only 5.4, 5.10, 6.4, 6.10, (etc..)
I've tested LTSP at my school with Ubuntu, but the client machines I
booted up weren't connected to an audio device anyway, so I couldn't test.
