I lost my uBuntu 5.4 completely when the power tripped in the middle of upgrading to 5.10.
So I installed 5.10 from scratch.
Of course, being a good IT man, I had all my important data files backed up.
But, being a very out of practice software man, I did not back up my "provider" files. Nor, being a very bad documentation man, did I document what I had done to get everything working in the first place. So I am now trying to re-engineer my solution for connecting via a dial up modem to the internet.
(I am using pppconfig to create the "provider" files and then pon to connect).
I have reached the stage where I seem to be connected to my ISP (the modem lights all say that I am connected anyway), but Firefox can't connect to anything. It looks to me as if I do not have an IP address, but I am not sure if I am looking in the right place.
Is there a log file somewhere that I can look at to see what is going on with the modem connection?
Any other suggestions? Any differences between 5.4 and 5.10 that I should know about in this area?
Thanks,
Bill
