Can Ubuntu handle winmodems?

Jay,

Tell us the chipset on the modem card. The modem manufacturer and model
number are important, but not as critical as the chip on the card. It is was
manufactured in the last 3 or 4 years, even though it is a WINMODEM, it may
be alright on Linux, but that is very dependent upon the main chip of the
modem board. Your best bet is to turn to someone who has been there on that
issue (by reporting the model and chip to this list). Basically, the main
chip is the largest one on the card. Reading all the Linmodem stuff is time
consuming and may leave you uncertain about the "fit" of your WINMODEM and
Linux. Planning a firewall/gateway as a way to avoid using a modem is quite
expensive and also difficult, compared to plugging in a workable modem or
connecting through a broadband connection -- especially if you don't have an
extra older computer in the closet or on the shelf.

With that said, much that you will want on Linux is sitting out on the web
in certified repositories. Much of the Linux software is HUGE, same for
updates, and that is more than daunting for a modem connection. Do you have
a NIC and do you plan on a broadband connection? Your satisfaction may be
much greater with a broadband connection. Videos, Music, all that stuff is
large, and Linux is plenty fast to handle it after you get in on your
machine, but the connection must be fast enough to keep you humming instead
of falling asleep while waiting.
