Breezy install won't boot

I have done many installations of Ubuntu - laptop and desktops with
various intel and amd procs, ATA and SCSI disks and generally have had
no problems until now.

I have a two 160 G disk RAID array on a Silicon Image 3112 RAID adapter
card.

My most recent install (clean) on this system seems to go fine, but when
it's time to remove the CD and reboot, it says it's loading Grub but it
never actually starts.
The only clue I've found is that although the partitioner sees the disks
as sda and sdb when it comes time to install Grub it goes to the master
boot record of the first hard disk - hd0,0.

Not sure this is a problem but something is wrong somewhere.
Anyone have an idea?

Thanks for your time,
CJ
