Simple instructions for getting Java to work on 5.10?

I got Java to work, thank you all for the help!

I noticed that Synaptic has a checkbox option to use the "multiverse", and
that it is also possible to hand-edit the "sources.list" file - is one of
these methods preferable to the other?

I will also try the "automatigix" application.
