Does scanning work in 5.10?

I use an Epson 600 usb scanner on an infrequent basis. It has always
worked well. Now I come to use it with 5.10 and I find that, from
within Gimp, some of the A4 document is missing (only about 2/3 of the
length appears and some of the vertical edges are cut off). If I use
xscanimage, it scans the whole page, but the files it produces are
unreadable by Gimp or anything else I've got (although the file browser
produces thumbnail images). If I use quiteinsane, it will produce a
preview, but a full scan stops at 99% and results in a blank window..
I note in the epson.conf config file it is set up as a scsi scanner
(it used to be usb when I first acquired it), although there don't seem
to be any related scsi devices in /dev, nor are there any usb devices.
All very odd. There was a time when I thought I understood some of this.
