Clamshell iBook, using ubuntu to install Tiger

It doesn't have FW.  I read on the net
(http://blog.hardmac.com/archives/tiger-on-clamshell-ibook)
that someone booted from a USB iPod.  However my
clamshell will not even recognize the iPod when
running in OS 9.
