I have used Ion (various iterations) for several years now.  It doesn't
tkae long to learn and is extremely light weight with a very small
footprint.  You can also take a look at ratpoison (adjustments to
~/.ratpoisonrc make key bindings a snap) and wmii, two other wm with a
very smiliar philosophy:  lightweight, easy to use, and no eyecandy ;-)
