You didn't say whether you set up the hosts and client files... until
you create those, it does nothing. (You have to specify what clients
get backed up and by what mechanism.)

Several months back I got an Ubuntu system going with Backuppc, but
the Debian/Ubuntu documentation included with it was confusing because
it hadn't been customized for the environment. From a quick glance
through the documentation at sourceforge I think it's MUCH improved,
so give it a look.
