The drivers are not broken, they were implemented this way on purpose. 
The kernel devs ( rightly ) decided that it would be foolish to bloat 
each driver with duplicate raid code that may or may not even be used. 
Instead they made the drivers use the hardware for what it really is -- 
a multi channel SATA controller, and left the raiding up to the device 
mapper.
