Fetching updated packages automatically

I can see that the script /etc/cron.daily/apt is running apt-get
update for me every night. Every night? I think so.
Well, it seems to use some variables to determine its behaviour, and I
would like to enable the automatic fetching of updated packages.

IOW, every night, I want it to apt-get update && apt-get -d
dist-upgrade, so that I can update when I want without delay.

Anybody knows where I should set the option? /etc/apt/* do not seem to
do AFAICS...
