feisty: acx100: "no wireless extensions" error

hi
on a fresh install of ubuntu feisty, kernel 2.6.19, recent acx100 (not  
sure of the version -- it's the one in the current  
linux-restricted-modules p[ackage on ubuntu), my dwl-650+ no longer  
works right.  I followed some web instructions about resetting the  
firmware version, after which I was able to load the acx module  
successfully, but when I try to bring up the interface thus:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless_mode managed
wireless_essid essid

I get an error:

error for wireless request: Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0; operation not supported.


iwconfig shows :no wireless extensiions for wlan0.

this card worked fine under dapper.

I don't know enough about this to diagnose further.  any hints?
