Dapper volume-control

I upgraded to Dapper with 'apt-get dist-upgrade' after the GUI upgrade gave up,
which mostly worked, but one thing that isn't functioning is the volume control.

The volume control icon has an 'X' and right-click selecting 'open volume
control' produces an error message
"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found"

A far as I can see I have all the relevant gstreamer packages installed, and
lspic shows my SB card:
0000:00:0d.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy LS

I have sound, but cannot adjust the volume. This error is similar the one
mentioned here <http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1759402>
but my audio is already enabled.

There seems to be a missing library which I can't find to install. What might
be useful is the output from 'dpkg -l' for a standard Dapper install so I could
compare it to what I actually have installed. Could someone send that to me?
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/allpackages.en.txt.gz is not it despite
claims in http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper).

Cheers,

Toby
