nVidia, AC97 sound, and UDEV.

Running: "edgy" with kernel 2.6.17, msi mainboard with nVidia subsystems.

I went to the nVidia site recently, looking for clues about why I don't
get any sound.
They've dropped their own "NVSOUND" driver and they claim I should use
"intel8x0.c"
There is such a thing in the kernel source tree, but no driver in
/lib/modules answers to 'intel8*' on the other hand, there is a module
"sound/pci/ac97" OK, I figure I'm real smart so I do a "# modprobe
ac97" which appears to work. Also, recalling what nVidia used to
require, I put a /etc/modprobe.d/soundcard-ac97 with "alias sound-card-0
ac97"
My machine remains as silent as ever.

SO, am I using the right driver, or do I need to compile in the "intel8x0".

And, while we're at it, if someone can advise what udev configuration
statements I need to assign the /dev/dsp* names to the appropriate node
numbers, that would be nice too.

TIA,
