Thanks for that. I have now resized the partition to the maximum extent using Live CD. I have just one final question. There's a small partition - about 1.46 GB - that Live CD did not allow me to include in the resize of my partition. It is designated unallocated space. Is this something created by Ubuntu or something else and, if the latter, what is it? 

I will be documenting the remove Ubuntu procedure in detail for the list so that others who have this problem with have a simple, worry free procedure to follow to restore their system, since none of the information sources I consulted were completely satisfactory.
