> this is what happened in detail.i inserted the CD and the ubuntu installation menu appeared.as you know, there are two options:the "start or install ubuntu" and the "start ubuntu in graphics mode" options.when choosing the first option,it started loading files and then opened a black screen with two white cursors alittle apart from each other.i touched every key plus ctrl+alt+F1 but nothing happened.then i restarted the computer and tried the second option.the same loading as the first one and then a blue screen with a message appears saying that "the xserxer is not correctly configured" and asking me if i want to view the logfile.when i accept, another screen appears which says at the end "no screen found".i think the problem is with the monitor since it is plug and play.if you have experienced the same difficulty and know a way out of it,write me at:

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but 640M isn't enough for almost
anything, anymore; I think it requires 32M, minimum. But maybe I read
that wrong.

But it seems to be close to what I think the problem is: memory.

I've set up dozens of machines, some of them running every day for
the last 6 years. And when I see kernel panics (always) it's hardware.
Thankfully, there's memtest, right there on the CDROM. Let that
run...if you see anything in red, that'll point to the error. It's very
throuough- it can take some time. But if there's a loose bit, a bit
stuck on or off, it'll find it.

Personally, I'd the memory as "suspect", swap it out, and then see
if the problem continues.

Keep in mind, though, it's very possible that something on the
motherboard could have just died...something you probably can't change.

    Good luck with it!
