kernel message: drive appears confused

I am getting messages:-

cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)

Googling suggests that others have experienced this, but the messages
seem to refer to earlier kernels and I found no solution.  Does anyone
know anything about this?

The drive is hdg on a pci Promise card, along with a HD  (hde), on a new
Asus M2N-E motherboard. With 2.6.15-26-amd64-generic. It has worked OK
on the few occasions that I've needed it so far.
