So...  It is, in your opinion, socially "ept" to do the textual
equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying "I CAN'T
HEEEEAAAAAR YOU!" at the top of your lungs?

That's very odd.  I'm pretty sure that this is behaviour that is usually
frowned upon as socially inept in Kindergarten....
