AFAIK, VESA maxes out at 1280x1024, so you'll need to find which video
card does your machine has. I guess it will be ATI, nVidia or maybe
Intel, so there shouldn't be any problems making it work.

For example, the MacBook Pro uses an ATI video card that gets detected
by Ubuntu as a VESA video card. I downloaded ATI's fglrx driver,
installed it, and set the resolution to 1440x900. Bang! It's not
difficult.
