Euro symbol

I'm not having much luck today:

<Ctrl+Alt+4> is my usual combo for the Euro - it's even printed on the 
keyboards hereabouts, including one bought in the US!

So, what's the secret?

There is no mention of it here:

A search on 'euro' returns zero entries!

In Gnome, System/Prefs/Keyboard/Layout Options

Layout options? Provides some check boxes for

  Adding the Euro sign to certain keys

and the options: E, 5, and 2. What are these and how are they used?
