Hi,
when working with Suse and having an older Thinkpad T21
(1024x768) I always did it like this:
1. install with laptop lid closed and external 1280x1024
monitor connected.
Result: external monitor worked
(I suppose you could achieve the same without reinstall, by
dpkg-reconfiure xserver-org
2. Disconnect external monitor and open laptop:
Result: 1024x768 internal just works fine.
I only had to use two different X configurations when I was in
a viceversa situation,
i.e. having a 1600x1200 Laptop but lower res. 1280x1024 "only"
monitor.
regards
Eberhard
