hello list,

Saturday, August 19, 2006,  7:44 am:

interested in getting a micro star bluetooth dongle and a plantronics
headset working, mostly as an experiment, with my desktop. i've read the
bluetooth setup wiki, but i'm not sure what the following messages mean.

pickle at slave_state:~$ hcitool dev
Devices:  hci0    00:0C:76:47:81:CC

pickle at slave_state:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/bluez-utils restart

 * Restarting Bluetooth services...
[ ok ]

pickle at slave_state:~$ lsusb

pickle at slave_state:~$ sudo hidd --search
Searching ... No devices in range or visible
* once i read the headset manual, and **turned it on(!)**,
"Searching..." returned a system prompt.

sudo gedit /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:819:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
pickle at slave_state:~$ /etc/init.d/bluez-utils restart

pickle at slave_state:~$ xhost +

pickle at slave_state:~$

[... from wiki]:
Pair the headset with PC (as above with the Mobile)
      Headset needs to be in pairing-mode (often this is accomplished
with holding the on buttons for a looong time).
      Start kbluetoothd, click on it, in the opened konqueror window
click on the headset (sometimes the MAC-Adress shows up).

i have a kbluetoothd icon in the system tray, but...

      A popup should request the PIN for the Headset from you (mostly
"0000" or "1234").
      (Plantronics Voyager 510 uses a PIN of 0000).

... i don't get a popup. right clicking produces a list with:
    open recent
    connection details
    configuration    =>
    help/quit
                               =>   config services
                                        paired devices
                                        config notifications
                                        x - always visible

"paired devices" produces a blank listing.

Under Applications/System Tools/Bluetooth Manager, a small 'Bluetooth
devices' window opens that displays a pretty '320 Plantronics' icon, but
no clicking (right/left) produces any observable activity. so close! so far!

is there further info out there -- especially for those of use who are
hardware-challenged? thanks in advance.
