Hi Elsabe,
anything you install on Ubuntu should come from a "repository" or from 
the Install CD.
You will need internet access to install from a repository. Applications 
for other varieties
of Linux will not work with Ubuntu. e.g. if you installed an .rpm 
package it will not work.
Go up to the "System Menu", down to "Help" > System documentation > down 
to "Desktop Guide"
a lot of very helpful info there.
