Skype for Linux (AMD64)

If you have an AMD64 and you would like to have free calling to any phone in
Canada / USA for the rest of 2006. Listen up.

I fought with Skype for a day or two to get this to work, so I thought I
would share my success.

1. You will need the "Static binary tar.bz2 with Qt compiled in" which is
available here, http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-static

2. Note: Skype for Linux uses the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture)

3. They say the Qt is compiled in, but I installed it anyways. If you can
spare a few megabytes of disk space just grab the qt3 for safe measure. I
went ahead and installed the qt4 as well.

4. If not already installed you will need to make sure you have "libasound2"
installed or you will have an error that a shared library could not be found
- (something like libasound.so.2 or something similar sounding)

Below is my checklist of modules that I installed using the synaptic package
manager.
If you try to use OSS, Skype may still work, but the sound may be terrible.
It is made to be used with ALSA.
Even though I may not have needed everything on my list below, I now have
free long distance with crystal clear sound so who cares. ha... Good luck
though, and hopefully someone finds this useful.
