Hi,

I had the same problem with my oldish CRT. I did "sudo dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg". It allows one to set the horizontal and vertical refresh
rate of the monitor. 

You propably can go through the other settings in the program by
clicking Enter until you come to "Please choose a method for selecting
your monitor characteristics". Choose "Advanced" and in the following
two windows fill in the proper values for your monitor.

You can also manually edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
