The choices you can make at the initial bootmanager (most oftenly
it is grub) usually have no impact at all in regard to the
Xsession that you want run (except that you can configure the
runlevel in a way to prevent any graphical sessions to be run).

Peter is referring to the displaymanager (most commonly either
kdm or gdm) login, where you can choose which session (either
kde or gnome or fluxbox, icewm, xfce... pretty much anything
that is installed) you want to run.

In the case that you start from the console with "startx", I
would try to use "startx kde" instead. Note: I did not test this,
I just remember that this is what I used on Suse, several years
ago.
