Here are some pieces of information for you. Basically, you need to
figure out whether it is an Old World or a New World ROM. New World
ROMs are from the Lombard onward. Basically, if you have firewire, it
is a Pismo, which I used to have, which is New World. If it has a SCSI
slot, and a bronze keyboard, it should be a Lombard and also New World.
The telltale sign is usually the firewire connector. If you have that,
it is fine to put Ubuntu on it because it is New World. Below is a
snippet from Wikipedia for the G3. Read up on the New World ROM and Old
World is there for reference.
The "Lombard", (AKA: Bronze Keyboard) a thinner, lighter, and faster
(333 or 400 MHz) PowerBook with a longer battery life and had both USB
and SCSI built in and was a New World ROM Mac, and then the "Pismo",
which replaced the single SCSI port with two FireWire ports,

I have xubuntu on a ibook g3 and i did not buy any disks. I downloaded
the ppc .iso from ubuntu. I don't know much about the ppc architecture
so i'm not sure if they are the same.
