Is ATI/OpenGL acceleration working?

I have got fglrx installed, and fglrxinfo produces a normal-looking
report, but when I look at screensaver samples they seem to soak a lot
more CPU than I'd expect, and they tend to be a little jittery, with a
low apparent frame rate and occasional small hiccups in motion.

fgl_glxgears, on the other hand, shows rates in the 500-600 fps range,
and looks nice and smooth.  I get the sense that acceleration is
working, but perhaps not making itself known to the whole system
somehow(?)

Any hints would be very much appreciated.
