Gnome 2.14 by default uses gnome-screensaver.  Better integration I 
guess.  As for removing it and installing X screensaver, You can do that 
but know you may/will have problems when you upgrade.  Since the 
ubuntu-desktop package is not installed, new software that would 
otherwise be installed might not.
