I'm just following-up to note a workaround for this problem: 
I completely wiped out (retaining /home) and then reinstalled the OS 
from scratch from the Dapper-beta CD, and the problem did not occur in 
this instance.

Unfortunately, I now have to reinstall and reconfigure all of the
additional apps and services that I usually have installed.. :-(
This has made me decide to do what I always meant to but never did(!): 
note down what extras I have installed, and keep backup copies of 
changed config files in /home so that I can re-use them again should I 
ever need to do the same again.
