Ubuntu installs - best way to backup files

I've used a combination of Knoppix, dd, and bigass USB hard drive for
this. Takes some time, but set it up and have them take you to lunch.
When you get back, unplug the USB drive first, wipe, start the install,
and take a nap while you download the updates.

Oh, make sure they buy you a T-bone or a lobster for lunch. They won't
rush to call you to tell you to switch it back.
