I tried brightside here, and it works well for the purpose: just look in
"System - Preferences - Screen Actions" to configure it, or run
"brightside-properties" after installing it. 

I haven't tried using xfwm4 with Gnome, so I can't really comment on that.
I suppose it depends on what features you prefer in a window manager :)
