I have a dell D600 with the same problem which appeared suddenly a few
days ago after running ubuntu fine for almost six months.  I am going
to try and remove just the ubuntu-desktop and see what happens. 
Earlier I disabled the powernowd and freeze thing still happen, it is
rather annoying
