If you install gtweakui you get some extra tools in System ->
Preferences, one being 'gTweakUI - Nautilus'. You get a checkbox for a
set of icons you want displayed on the desktop, one being the Trashcan.
Or you could use gconf-editor and do it by hand. apps -> nautilus ->
desktop -> check the 'trash_icon_visible' box.

You can switch off the showing of icons in the menus, that'd remove the
bling and only give you the text. Or you could remember that for all
applets, the 'blue minus' means 'remove me'. ;-)

The button I agree with, not the rest, but then I've never been in such
a hurry to empty the trashcan I've instead removed the icon from the
panel.
