To assist debugging, please try this on the comand line:

`ifdown --verbose eth0` to make sure the interface is down. 

Then please capture the output of this command
`ifup --verbose eth0`

There should be more diagnostic output and you should see what exactly
hangs at this point. Post this output if you still have problems..
