the recovery mode should only give you a txt-based login, are you saying
that it couldn't go to the login there even ?

what you could do is the following :
- in MS-windows
  install http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
- via that program backup your data from your ubuntu-partition
- reinstall ubuntu
