HELP!!! Major Problem

First things first. What version of Ubuntu are you using? Hoary, Breezy, 
Dapper? What's this 'earlier version' you are talking of - a kernel?
Can you log in to a terminal (ie, X isn't starting automatically)? Have 
you tried (from the terminal) 'startx'?
